My Scariest Cebu Pacific Flight - Emergency Landing at Nagoya

Updated: Jun 12

This flight was one of the cheapest Cebu Pacific international flights promos that I have ever purchased. I bought this from a Cebu Pacific seat sale online. It was a round-trip ticket from Cebu to Narita to Cebu, where I only paid a little over P2000.00 (about US$40). So, it was the most affordable Cebu Pacific promo, it was also my most scary experience with the said airline.

Thursday, 14 December 2017, 12:05PM. We took off from Narita International Airport on our way to Mactan Cebu International Airport where we were expected to arrive at 4:20PM of the same day. Shortly after take-off, I took a nap and was awaken by an announcement. We were just about an hour in our flight, when the captain announced we had to divert to Nagoya Airport. Prior to that, the cabin attendant, announced that we are short of fuel, hence we needed to fill our tanks up, at the nearest airport.

“I was confused at first, because of the announcement that we were short of fuel, when we were burning a lot of it by circling the area for, what it feels like, almost an hour.”

As an avid viewer of “Air Crash Investigation”, I was so scared, because based on what was always shown on the said series, aircraft would usually burn fuel by doing orbits, to mitigate fire during emergency landings. I was just silent, and to me it felt like I’m almost going to have a heart attack. I expected to be home in Cebu before 7:00PM, hence I didn’t bring any extra blood pressure maintenance medicines in my hand carry.

The Cebu Pacific captain of that flight once again spoke

and now with more details of the situation. He assured us that everything was under control, and that there was just a minor glitch in the aircraft’s computer system. He further explained that we were in a safe distance to Nagoya Airport, and why the need for us to orbit to burn [and probably dump some fuel], was because our overall weight was just too heavy to land.

Finally, after an hour or so of the scariest moment of my life, we safely landed at Nagoya Airport. We were not allowed to disembarked while everything was routinely checked, as well as while the aircraft was being refueled. It was fine, since it was winter in Japan, and the cabin’s temperature were favorable. We were given some snacks and refreshment, while the safety of the aircrafts is ensured for our final destination.

What really happened?

Since the aircraft engineer/technician is Japanese, they had to communicate in English, which gave me the opportunity to eavesdrop, about what really happened.

Prior to our take-off at Narita International Airport, Cebu Pacific aircraft’s computer displayed the “clean water” as full, while the waste water as empty. About an hour or so, in the flight, the computer showed the “clean water” as half-full, while the waste water was showing full. And these were the only pieces of information that I have gathered, and there were also no further explanations given.

What do you think may have happened? What do you think may have caused this? Or, was this situation common, or was this scenario is critical to everyone’s safety which will merit a diversion to another airport?

My overall experience with this Cebu Pacific flight

Despite this terrifying experience, I was very well impressed with Cebu Pacific, the captain, and the officers of this flight. This only showed that our safety, or the safety of their passengers was their utmost priority. Moreover, Kudos to the cabin crews of this flight – who remained calm, very professional, accommodating, and who made sure that every one of the passengers in that flight were taken care of.

Lastly, what do you think made all of us relax, calm, and very cooperative? It was because, (1) they empathized, (2) they provided us some assurance, (3) and their 100% presence in the entire situation.

We landed and arrived safely past 7PM of the same day, and my mom was super worried, why I haven’t even texted or called when she knew I would already be back in Cebu by around 4PM.
